Aegean Rebreath’s third visit to Syros

We visited Syros third year in a row! With the valuable help of Apivita volunteers, we attempted, this time, to clean the marina of Finikas. Although we had some intel that the port was clean, our experience with the level of marine litter in our seas helped us take the right decision and visit the port. As such, we found ourselves at the bottom of an utterly overburdened port which we managed to decongest almost completely. We managed to remove a great number of objects of daily use and fishing gear with the vigour and stubbornness of all the volunteers who travelled from Athens for this exact purpose. The first day of activities closed with the team of divers completing the difficult task of relieving the reef from 150 kg of abandoned nets.

The port in Kini, which we visited on Sunday, was mostly clean, which confirms our conclusions about the marine pollution caused by tourism and excessive fishing. Kini is a small shelter mainly for private boats and yachts. The two days of our activities ended with our research activities and a visit to the Marine Litter Collection Station that operates seamlessly: fishing gear from local fishermen and recyclable materials had been properly separated in the designated bins. We are very pleased that the efforts of the past few years have been met with valuable companions. And, we keep going further!

A scenic but quite overburdened marina...
